Pelosi's Popularity

Reader Tom sends this link. It's a poll showing that Nancy Pelosi has the highest approval rating of the four Congressional leaders. Her counterpart, John Boehner, is the least popular leader, scoring lower than even Mitch McConnell.

Despite an intense effort by Republicans to draw a tail and horns on Pelosi, she's proven to be a popular Speaker. That's no surprise, because she's a competent, on-message leader of her caucus. If she's a factor in Massa's 2010 campaign, it's likely that she'll be a positive one.

NANCY PELOSI SAID JUST YESTERDAY THAT SUPPORTING ABORTION CLINICS AROUND THE WORLD
( with US tax dollars ) WOULD AMOUNT TO A STIMULUS TO THE US ECONOMY . YOU CALL THAT COMPENENT.

YES, BECAUSE THAT'S NOT WHAT SHE SAID ON SUNDAY. HERE'S WHAT SHE SAID:

"The family planning services reduce cost," Pelosi said, "One of the elements of this package is assistance to the states. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children's health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government."

IT'S NOT ABOUT ABORTION EITHER. IT'S ABOUT CONDOMS AND BIRTH CONTROL PILLS FOR LOW-INCOME PEOPLE. THAT'S CHEAPER THAN CHILDBIRTH AND IT WILL PREVENT ABORTIONS.

Man, all caps is exhausting. Anyway, it is interesting how the guy at the bottom of the popularity list, John Boehner, thinks that the most important way to oppose the stimulus plan is to get all huffy about the government paying for birth control. I doubt that you'll find a whole hell of a lot of the population getting very upset about government-sponsored birth control for those who can't afford it.

(And, yes, Obama killed the contraception measure, not because it was a bad idea, but to show that he's compromising.)

Maybe Nancy will come out in favor of the death penalty because that will also reduce costs to the states and the federal government ????????? Once they've gone through all their appeals we have to support them until they die. That can be expensive.

Buying poor people Trojans isn't really comparable to the death penalty, is it? Or maybe I'm missing something about poor people and/or Trojans.

C'mon Rotten - were talking saving money here.

So we agree then.

It's cheaper to put someone in jail for life than it is to put them to death, because of the costs involved in the appeal and execution. And a few trojans are a hell of a lot cheaper than AFDC.

Paddy, you do know that all-caps turns off independent voters, right?

I think its a misleading number, because pelosi at least is popular among Democrats, while Boehner is not popular among Republicans. That may explain the poll.

Well, that's just another way of saying that Boehner is unpopular, isn't it? I mean, if Boehner can't even get support from his own party, he's got a real problem.

I think Boehner is not a great House leader, but I also think that the House Republicans are so nuts that he'd be screwed no matter what he did. Anyone who is viewed as the boss of Michelle Bachman, Phil Gingrey, and the rest is going to be disliked.

The one who is surprisingly unpopular to me is McConnell. It makes me wonder if he's the best choice as minority leader. (For the record, I 'm positive that Harry Reid is not the best choice for majority leader.)

Actually, I thought McConnell would be at the bottom. He comes off as a real old-style political hack. (Like Harry Reid, who I agree is no great shakes as majority leader.)

As for Boehner, you're right, in a large part he's a function of his caucus.
